Riverview Redmen down Glace Bay Panthers to win third-straight high school hockey league title

SYDNEY, N.S. — 

For the third-straight year, the Riverview Redmen are the Cape Breton High School Hockey League Highland region champions.

The Redmen defeated the Glace Bay Panthers 6-1 in Game 2 of the league championship series at the Canada Games Complex on the Cape Breton University campus on Thursday. With the win, Riverview takes the best-of-three series 2-0.

Six different goal scorers found the back of the net for the Redmen including Kendall MacQueen, Sam MacKinnon, Noah MacKinnon, A.J. Ley, Trevor Jennings and Chase Sampson.

Xavier Johnson had the lone goal for the Panthers.

Riverview’s Michael MacMullen made 22 saves. Glace Bay’s Colton Boutilier stopped 14 of 20 shots.

After a scoreless first period, Riverview jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period with goals by MacQueen, MacKinnon and MacKinnon, before Johnson cut the Redmen lead to two with a goal for the Panthers.

Riverview would add three more goals in the third period coming off the sticks of Ley, Jennings and Sampson to secure the victory.

The Redmen advance to the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation provincial championship. The tournament will be hosted by Northumberland Regional High School, March 6-8.

The provincial schedule was not announced at press time.
