Panther Classic - Day 2 recap
SYDNEY, N.S. – The Panther Classic high school hockey tournament continued on Friday at the Canada Games Complex on the Cape Breton University Campus with six games on the schedule.
Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals 3, Sydney Academy 1
Caden MacLaren powered the offense for the Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals as they beat the Sydney Academy Wildcats.
Mason Grant also found the back of the net for the Royals.
Tytan Donovan had the lone goal for the Wildcats.
Matthew MacEachern picked up the win in goal. Hunter Chenhall was tagged with the loss.
Riverview Redmen 9, Sackville Kingfishers 0
Andrew McCarron and Bryden Johnston each scored twice to help the Redmen blank the Kingfishers.
Kinnon Williams, Carter Harnish, Chase Sampson, Jared Hunt and Josh MacAskill also netted goals for Riverview.
Ryan Tanner posted the shutout between the pipes for the Redmen. Jeff Comeau and Brandon Carr shared time in goal for Sackville. Comeau was tagged with the loss.
CEC Cougars 3, Glace Bay Panthers 2 (SO)
The CEC Cougars opened their tournament schedule with a shootout win over the host Glace Bay Panthers.
Cam DeGroot and Cody MacDonald scored goals for the Cougars in regulation time, while Tyler Clarke and Alec Campbell answered with markers for the Panthers.
Shootout statistics were not available from the game sheet.
Steven Jackson picked up the win in goal. Nick Bigley was the losing netminder for Glace Bay.
Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals 3, Memorial Marauders 0
Duncan Chisholm scored twice to lead Dr. J.H. Gillis to its second win of the tournament.
John Brophy also found the twine for the Royals.
Kuri Smith was the winning netminder for the Antigonish-based school. Jonathan Dolomont shouldered the loss for Memorial.
CEC Cougars 3, Sydney Academy Wildcats 0
Three different goal scorers powered the CEC Cougars to its second win of the day.
Calum MacLeod, Braden Gray and Cody MacDonald each scored goals for the Cougars.
Cody Patriquin posted the shutout between the pipes for the Truro-based school. Donny GooGoo was the losing netminder for Sydney Academy.
Glace Bay Panthers 6, Sackville Kingfishers 0
Dylan MacDonald scored a pair of goals in the Glace Bay Panthers victory over the Sackville Kingfishers.
Aiden Donovan, Ty Tracey, Xavier Johnson and Austin Parsons also fired home goals for the Panthers.
Colton Boutilier posted the shutout for Glace Bay. Jeff Comeau suffered the loss in goal for Sackville.
The 2018 Panther Classic will continue on Saturday with five games on the schedule, beginning with Sackville and Memorial at 10 a.m., followed by Glace Bay and Dr. J.H. Gillis at noon, and CEC versus Riverview at 2 p.m.
The tournament semifinals are set for Saturday evening at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., while the championship game is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
