NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — It’s been six years since the Memorial Marauders last won the Mae Kibyuk Memorial Green and Gold Hockey Tournament, but the Sydney Mines school hopes to change that this year.

The Marauders will host the annual tournament this week, beginning today and running until Sunday at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.

Along with the Marauders, the six-team tournament will also feature the four local high schools – Riverview Ravens, Glace Bay Panthers, and Sydney Academy Wildcats – as well as the Dartmouth Spartans and J.L. Ilsley Judges of Spryfield.

Memorial enters the tournament with a 1-2-0-0 record early in the Cape Breton High School Hockey League season. The club picked up its first win of the year last Sunday, defeating the Panthers 6-1 at Miners Forum in Glace Bay.

Marauders head coach Marc Lyle believes the momentum of the victory will lead into the club’s tournament opener against Glace Bay on Thursday night.

“They know they have what it takes to win,” said Lyle. “The key is to find consistency in the small details in their game, which will make them successful moving forward.”

The Marauders have 10 veteran players in their lineup who played in the green and gold tournament last November, an event won by the Dartmouth Spartans.

Lyle expects his team to have a strong showing at this year’s tournament and be in contention for a tournament title, which the school last won in 2016.

“Three games into the regular season, they’ve shown they are willing to never back down from a battle and compete to the very end,” said Lyle. “The work ethic and positive attitude gives us no reason to think otherwise.”
