Sam Gracie’s hat trick powers Memorial Marauders to opening night win at Mae Kibyuk Memorial Green and Gold Hockey Tournament

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – Sam Gracie has been one of the top scorers in the Cape Breton High School Hockey League since the start of the season and he showed why on Thursday night.

Gracie had a four-point performance, which included a hat trick, to lead the Memorial Marauders to a 6-2 victory over the Sydney Academy Wildcats on opening night of the Mae Kibyuk Memorial Green and Gold Hockey Tournament at Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.

The forward scored once in each of the three periods while picking up on an assist on the eventual game-winner off the stick of Jesse Ross.

Along with Gracie and Ross, Davis MacInnis and Daniel Young also found the back of the net for the host Marauders.

Nolan Riley and Keagan Corbett replied with goals for the Wildcats.

Memorial’s Andrew Forrest picked up the win in goal. Sydney Academy’s Dylan Lesnick was tagged with the loss. Statistics were not reported.

The Marauders will continue the tournament on Friday at 11 a.m. against the Dalbrae Dragons and 7 p.m. against the Riverview Ravens. They wrap up the round robin against the J.L. IIsley Judges on Saturday at 11 a.m.

In other tournament action, Riverview edged the Glace Bay Panthers 5-4 in overtime.

Rory Mills scored the overtime winner to complete the hat trick. Aidan Stanwick and Gahan Rector also fired home goals for the Ravens.

Kale MacDonald, Morgan Neville, Hudson Clarke and Ty Oliver netted goals for the Panthers.

Riverview’s Kayden Mollons picked up the win. Glace Bay’s Brandon Cole shouldered the loss. Statistics were not reported.
