SYDNEY – With no games scheduled for the majority of this week due to high school exams, teams in the Cape Breton High School Hockey League will soon have a jam-packed schedule.

Six games will be played in the league between Friday and Tuesday, Jan. 31 which will be followed by the annual Red Cup Showcase, hosted by the Riverview Ravens, beginning on Feb. 2 in Coxheath.

The busy schedule will kick off on Friday with Riverview hosting Memorial at 8 p.m. at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath.

Memorial will continue the weekend on Saturday when they travel to Glace Bay to play the Panthers on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Miners Forum in Glace Bay.

Two games will be played on Sunday with Glace Bay hosting Sydney Academy at 7 p.m. at Miners Forum, while Riverview and Memorial will once again play at 8:15 p.m. at Centre 200 in Sydney.

The schedule continues on Jan. 31 with Sydney Academy playing Memorial at 7 p.m. at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre, while Glace Bay and Riverview will meet at 8:15 p.m. at Centre 200.

Riverview currently sits in first place in the four-team league with a 13-1-0-0 record and 37 points. Sydney Academy is in fourth place with a 1-14-1-0 record and four points.

The two teams to watch for during the six-game schedule will be Glace Bay and Memorial. Only four points separate the second-place Panthers and third-place Marauders in the standings, making Saturday’s game key for both teams.

The School Sport Nova Scotia Highland Region playoffs are expected to begin sometime after the Red Cup Showcase.

Regional championships must be completed by Feb. 25, according to SSNS. The provincial championship tournament is slated for March 3-5 in the Halifax area.
