NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – The Memorial Marauders are off to a 2-0 start to kick off the Cape Breton High School Hockey League.

Memorial edged the Sydney Academy Wildcats 3-2 in their home opener on Thursday night at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.

COXHEATH, N.S. – In a back-and-forth opening game, the Glace Bay Panthers were able to outscore the Riverview Ravens in Cape Breton High School Hockey League action on Wednesday.

The Panthers, who scored six goals in the second period, defeated the Ravens 8-6 in front of a jam-packed Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath.

Kale MacDonald and Dylin White each scored twice, while Ryan Aucoin, C.J. Peach-McNeil, Garrett MacIntosh and Hudson Clarke added single markers for the Panthers (1-0-0-0).

Gahan Rector, Rory Mills, Matthew Burke, Lucas Phillipo, Owen Buckley and Marcus Kelly replied with goals for the Ravens (0-1-0-0).

Glace Bay’s Brandon Cole made 15 saves. Riverview’s Kayden Mollons stopped 22 of 30 shots.

High school hockey action continues on Thursday with Memorial hosting Sydney Academy at 7:40 p.m. at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.

HIGH SCHOOL PROVINCIALS: C.P. Allen wins Division 1 boys' hockey title

Will Normandeau scored twice and added a pair of assists as the C.P. Allen Cheetahs defeated the Riverview Ravens 6-2 to capture the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 boys' hockey championship on Monday in Bedford.

 

Max Baldwin added a pair in the title win while Evan Amirault and Cooper Hickey had singles.

 

Matthew Burke and Aiden Stanwick replied for the Ravens.

 

The Cheetahs advanced to the championship game with a 5-3 victory over the Citadel Phoenix in the morning semifinal. Baldwin and Owen Forsythe each netted a pair in the win, while Amirault had one. AJ Metlej, Finn Merritt and Ethan Legere countered for the Phoenix.

 

In the other semifinal, Matthew Burke scored twice as the Ravens doubled the Lockview Dragons 4-2. Braedy MacKenzie and Luc Sampson added singles for Riverview, while Bailey Conrad had both Lockview goals.

Cape Breton high school hockey teams set for provincial championships this weekend

SYDNEY, N.S. — Four Cape Breton hockey teams will hit the ice for School Sport Nova Scotia provincial championship tournaments this weekend. 

In the Division 1 tournament, the Riverview Ravens will travel to the Halifax Regional Municipality to compete for the championship, which will be hosted by Halifax West High School at BMO Centre in Bedford. 

Riverview will be joined in Pool ‘B’ of the tournament by the Horton Griffins of Wolfville, Charles P. Allen Cheetahs of Bedford and the Halifax West Warriors of Halifax. 

Meanwhile, Pool ‘A’ will feature the Citadel Flames, Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars of Truro, Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals of Antigonish, and either Yarmouth or Lockview – the final team was not confirmed at publication time. 

The Ravens will open the event on Friday at 12:15 p.m. against Charles P. Allen, before facing Horton later in the day at 8:15 p.m. They finish the round robin on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against Halifax West. 

In other provincial hockey action this weekend, the Richmond Academy Hurricanes will host the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 2 boys’ championship at Richmond Arena in Louisdale. 

Along with the Hurricanes, the Strait Area Education Recreation Centre Saints and Inverness/Cape Breton Highlands Academy will also compete in the tournament. SAERC won the Highland title, defeating Inverness/Cape Breton Highlands Academy 5-1 on Tuesday in Inverness.

The teams and schedule for the tournament were not released publicly at publication time, however, a schedule was expected to be announced sometime on Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY: Glace Bay Panthers to play Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals in Division 1 boys hockey provincial qualifier Monday

GLACE BAY, N.S. - The Glace Bay Panthers will have an opportunity on Monday to punch their ticket to the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 1 boys' hockey provincial championship.

Glace Bay will travel to Antigonish to play the Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals in a provincial qualifying game. Puck drop is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Antigonish Arena.

The Panthers and Royals each lost their regional final series, setting up the qualifying game. Glace Bay lost to the Riverview Ravens in their league final, while Dr. J.H. Gillis was knocked off by the Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars of Truro.

The provincial championship will take place in Capital Region next weekend.
